Prom Night: the do-over!

This Saturday, the force known as DJ Cortez and myself will be DJing at Nita Nita for their somewhat annual "Prom Night". I played myself last year when I was unable to honour someone's request to Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting". I might have made up for it with Blackbox's "Strike It Up", but nevertheless, everyone had an awesome time and this year promises more of the awesome.

Festivities start around 8 and include some kickass food, prom photographer, drink specials, and a crowning of the prom king and queen! Extra points if you wear exactly what you wore to your own prom. No cover.

Nita Nita is at 146 Wythe Ave at North 8th in Williamsburg.

This week.

Sleep will be kept to a minimum this week as I prepare for...

Wednesday 4/29.
Taxi Taxi is back again at Union Hall in Park Slope. The new record is done and we're all pretty stoked about it. This show will be a bit more on the minimal side with the absence of Bryn on keys but we'll do our best to rock out.

Sunday 5/3.
Terence from Taxi Taxi and myself will be playing some songs and/or records at Poisson Rouge on Sunday night, as an opening set for our fellow McGill alumnus known as Kid Koala. This is also part of Koala's "Loud/Quiet" concept tour, which the folks at nufonia.com would be more than happy to explain. I also love how we are billed simply as "Terence and Paolo".

If you see me at Poisson Rouge and I happen to be either walking weirdly or complaining about how much my ass hurts, it's because earlier that day, Mrs P and I are also taking part in the TD Bank Five-Boro Bike Tour. 42 miles around NYC. I am excited to see all 5 boroughs of NYC on two wheels, and also kinda scared to do it with one gear. Hopefully 42/17 won't kill me on the bridge climbs. I'm a huge wuss.

18 March 2009

This Friday.

If anyone was wondering why I've been quietly singing America's "You Can Do Magic" to myself, this is why.

Worse than crack.

I've given in.

18 February 2009

Shows and stuff.

Damn. I've been slipping on the blog posting. Catch some other posts and shenanigans on the Turntable Lab blog, where i've been hanging out. Maybe I should just give in to Twitter and shut everything else down. I haven't even touched my MySpace blog. Jeez, what a flake I am.

This weekend:

Friday 20 Feb - Taxi Taxi rocks the opening slot of the Serious Business party at Public Assembly (the old Galapagos) in Williamsburg. $7 gets you in, we start at 10.

Saturday 21 Feb - My friend Woody invited me to play some records with him at Trophy Bar in Williamsburg. Come party with us. Woody is a fellow Lab alum, as well as an extremely talented comic artist.

Saturday 28 Feb - I'll be DJing at Nita Nita, also in Williamsburg. It's their anniversary party and if not for me, you should at least come for the kickass tapas.

P-Weezy.

This Sunday.

Sunday night special. Does anyone even watch the Simpsons anymore?

In other P-Love news:
Despite not having made any real progress on album numero dos, 2008 has been my year of guest appearances, with a whopping 3, count ‘em, 3 CDs released this year that I’ve appeared on. Awww yeah I’m the Lil’ Wayne of this shit.

Nicole Lizée: This Will Not Be Televised (Centrediscs)
Nicky and I met in college, where she was working on her Master’s thesis in composition: a piece written for turntables and orchestra. Homegirl is the only composer that I would stay in Winnipeg a week in the dead of winter for. Her first album is out now, which is a compilation of live performances of her works; title track was performed in Winnipeg last year, and “RPM” was performed in Kitchener, Ontario in 2005 with the Canadian Chamber Ensemble.
(In the world of experimental music, they use “works” instead of “songs”)

Sadat X: Generation X (Affluent Records)
Homie and co-worker Will Tell (who has yet to sign my copy of Thirstin Howl’s “Still Live With My Moms”) needed a couple of Nas lines cut up for a throwback joint. Now the shit is explained.

Erik Hove: Soundclash (Effendi Records)
E-Hova is also a fellow McGill alumnus whose name is still occasionally uttered in the halls of the Music building as “the legend of Hove”. We recorded this sax/bass/drums/turns album last summer, and despite me not making the release party in Montreal after getting refused entry at the Canadian border, I’m pretty pumped about this album, which has been about 7 years in the making. True story: I met Erik in the hip-hop room of some huge rave in Montreal in 1997 during Q-Bert’s 10-minute scratch set. Q pulled up to the rave in a limo, played for 10 minutes, then bounced. Maybe he couldn’t take the Vicks VapoRub smell that overpowered the room. Best $40 I ever spent. In 1997.

Soundclash in Montreal this weekend, Taxi Taxi in Brooklyn next week.

Out now. Cop it.

Hit me up for some Jardin du Cari!

Next week, Taxi Taxi returns to Southpaw where we open up for the Wedding Present. My 1995 self is pretty excited.

And this is the kind of people I work with during the day. Downtime + labemaker = shenanigans.
